With a mailing list you can view the latest topics at a glance, from the top. With a forum you always have to dig down into each section to see what's happening. On Si-community you have about 3 pages of top level headings. The most recent post could be to one of the sections lower down. Back in the day of XSI Base, it was a bit of both, as the most recent X posts were listed on the front page. That's my take on it.
