i don't know precisely but i think it was patent related... i guess that
can change now that OpendSubdiv is available. even if Solid Angle doesn't
use the library directly, they might be able to use the technique now? they
have stated in the past that their subdivision speed is superior to
OpenSubdiv out of the box.
