Child comp is usually fine. Just be careful not to break an arm plane or
leg plane (ie, only move a knee guide local to the leg bone length,
otherwise, rotate the leg joint to fit the guide.). My Softimage is
rendering otherwise I'd tell you the exact axis to move on, probably X axis.

If you delete a control curve in the controllers grp of the guide, gear
will make nice new default ones on generation. That should clean up your
controls. Or make a curve to desired shape, rename it to a controller in
the controllers grp, delete the original - Then gear should use that one.
