Well I really like XSI's behavior here and I would love to find a way to
do this in other apps. Seems like I'll need to wrap my head around
threads though, which I've never done, but seems well-documented online,
as well as my host app's event system's API, which is also a bit obscure
but has gotten me good results in the past.

If so, you have to compare the state of the "selection" in a
while loop until there's a change, the tricky thing of this is
that you would have to use threads in order to keep your software
responsive during the loop.
If your Qt tool is running within Softimage, you can simply rely
on the SDK calling PickObject/PickElement command.
