rather than animating a rough 3D arm (that lines up only soso)
you could do a really rough half cylinder - with the rotoscoped/keyed arm as 
mask - Just sayin'.

yes I want a matte object to block out the particles when they're behind
the arm, I think I'll model a rough 3d woman that will act as the
painter in 3d space.
