I have a nearly 10 year old Dell Precision Workstation which had an Nvidia GeForce GTX 260, and is now equipped with a Nvidia Quadro K4200. Neither had any issues.
Check your drivers, they might be old or incorrect. Don't install the other Nvidia crap they try to bundle into the driver.
