When dealing with systems, only install what you need. I only install the graphics drivers. I don't install Nview, PhysX, game controllers, or the other stuff. Currently using driver 382.05 because that version is appropriate for my hardware. You'll have to do the legwork to determine the appropriate version for yours. The Nvidia driver selector can usually figure it out. Just make sure to query for the graphics driver and not beta drivers or other variants.
Probably what makes the biggest difference is always performing a 'clean' install. It'll induce an extra reboot in the process, but it's only a minute or two. When you try to upgrade drivers in place (or applications in general for that matter) the installers try to get too smart and end up leaving legacy stuff 'just to be safe'. In the end that stuff only gums up the works.
