I think this is the same for a lot of us, virtual people becoming real friends and having meet-ups during user groups and XSI presentations.

Some form of Google groups would be best I guess, despite my aversion to anything Google.
Discord is nice, but not really for a list you want to want to search later on.
And anyone who suggests a FB group is automatically banned from the new system :P

Will keep an eye on this one..

this list was my rock during the early years of xsi

coming from using softimage 3D at a small games company, it was amazing to arrive in london, working on commercials, and connecting with a truly unique group

of users. We helped and were helped in equal measure, we commiserated the late nights and failed renders, and cajoled and tormented each other like only a group of

like minded friends could

there were monkeys and cheese, and porl and chinny and kim and countless others who crossed the line from virtual comrades to real world friends

i still use soft at least a couple of times a week, and constantly have the internal mantra mumbling away "if i was doing this in soft i'd be done by now"

maya has it's occasional moments of "oh, that's clever" but these are far outweighed by the constant "why does it have to be that way"

blender looks interesting, might have to give it a try, but getting to the age where the knowledge just doesn't go in like it used to....

so the struggle with maya (with which i've dabbled since the beta) continues

anyway, im babbling...

thanks for all the help, support and chuckles over the years guys

i'll always have a place in my heart for the list... and cheese

This list saved my life so many times. It will be a sad day when they shut this server down, but it doesn't sound like its happening yet right?  The email says we should just consider moving the list.

Although I rarely open SI nowadays, it remained alive through this list. If the list moves somewhere else, just drop an address, would love to stay in touch.

Thank you to you all in this awesome community. From every single post, I have gained sooo much knowledge.

Having to switch from Soft to Maya and then to teach it to students, I can't believe that I still have hair on my head.

Slowly moving to Blender as it looks very promising(even my students find it a joy to work in than Maya)

and hoping it could be the new Soft... fingers crossed... please share the link to the google group... I will follow you...

follow you wherever you will go 🎵🎶🎵🎶

I hate maya. It can’t handle anything. It is a daily pain in my ass.

On occasion I’ll run into someone here in Van who has a Soft background, and naturally no one else around us will know what we’re talking about, because all they have been exposed to is Maya. I hate to see it all finally wind down.

That community has been amazing and I'm sad to see the end of it.

Today my IT supervisor told me that softimage wasn't working properly with the latest drivers he wanted to push for the studio... the end is near.

We're about to wrap our first production in Maya at Blur. The last one in softimage might be already started...

I still make money using Softimage/Redshift 3D! I have tried to learn other software, but I find Softimage is still the fastest

to model and animate. Then, they released the latest version of Blender. Hey, that looks very familiar ! I believe it is time for me

to switch over..... slowly :)

If only Redshift would work with Blender.

Hi.

The 11th anniversary of the Softimage acquisition, and therefore this version of the list, has come and gone last month.  I started working at Softimage in 1997, and it's been part of my life ever since.  My black t-shirts are faded, and my children recently found some XSI "tattoos" and magnets in the basement which they used for Halloween.  Odd bits of Softimage memorabilia are spread around the house that only Dad can identify.

Every once in a while, I can sense IT sniffing around looking for old servers to retire. The Softimage mailing list server is some kind of Linux VM that I think continues to work as long as it doesn't bother anyone.

I think it's time to think about switching the list over to the google group that archives it before the plug gets pulled on us. One would join that group to post and get future emails rather than the list. There may be other resources people want to share to stay in touch, such as LinkedIn groups, and si-community.com, etc.
