With all that I/O you need a larger chip with more pins.

I bought two items for display, so I can experiment;

4 digit 7 segment display LED, flash one set of numbers and then the 
rest for a 8 digit display or use 2 of them.
A 10 segment 2 color LED bar. Actually you could do black, red, 
amber, or green with a little bit of software

Both were cheap (< $1.50) and very high efficiency, and the CPU chip 
I'm using is a 28 pin ATMEGA88 ($2) which has plenty of code space and I/O.
