Well, they're doing quite well. These chips have a hardware Background 
Debug Module in them which allows real-time Breakpoint, Single Step, 
Watch, etc. The Code Warrior compiler and assembler is free up to 32k. I 
insist on hardware ICE/Debug now, having spent years in the dark 
debugging :-) That takes PIC out of the picture. I like Atmel but the 
Debugger is expensive. That leaves Freescale with the USBSPYSER08. You 
will be very comfortable with the instruction set as it is the same as 
before plus enhancements in the S08 series. I also insist on C now, my 
assembly days are over :-)
