Actually, it is a little more subtle than I first thought:
- The link MTU being common to IPv6 and IPv4, one is enough.
- In IPv6, the default transmit MTU for off-link transmissions SHOULD be 1280.
- In IPv4, there is no standard value to  be recommended as default transmit 
MTU for off-link destinations (the network will fragment where needed). It may 
however be useful to have one that differs from the link MTU, especially on 
links that support 9000B Jumbo Frames.  


The bottom line could then be:
- Hosts SHOULD have a least 2 default transmit MTUs, one for all on-link 
transmissions and one for off-link IPv6 destinations.  
- They MAY advantageously have third one, modifiable by advanced users, for 
off-link IPv4.
