O-rings? Rust? You must mean "final drive chain". 

The "primary chain" is entirely inside the engine cases and has no o-rings.

Yes, gas is bad for the o-rings. You can soak it in kerosene safely, I 
think. Many people use WD-40 to clean their o-ring chains. I wouldn't 
use anything more aggressive than a scotch-brite pad for the scrubbing, 
as those o-rings can be damaged by a wire brush...
