Check to see whether you are in singular user mood. That might account for the missing directories.

Somehow, all of the /home/ directories for the user accounts on our Solaris
9 machine seem to have vanished. There was only one user account, cfusion,
in addition to root, and whenever I telnet into the machine, I get an error
telling me that there is no home directory, and the system is using / as a
home directory instead.
mkdir /home/cfusion as either cfusion or root fails; I get an error message
reading, "Failed to make directory '/home/cfusion'; Operation not
applicable."
This happened after our IT guy changed the hostname of the machine, but I
don't see how that can be related.
What could have happened to cause this? How can it be repaired?
