The problem is that automountd think it owns the /home directory. I had the exact same problem, after shutting down the daemon with "/etc/init.d/autofs stop" I was able to access /home correctly.

If that solves the problem for you, don't forget to make the change permanent in the appropriate runlevel directory, or change the config of the automounter.
