Try this:
edit /etc/hosts and add entry for mailhost

vi /etc/mail/sendmail.cf

go to section CP. and add line if not exists

DSrelay:mailhost.***.***

bounce sendmail daemon

/etc/init.d/sendmail stop
/etc/init.d/sendmail start

With point 3 the mail should be fowarded to our site mailserver which has
the access to do the lookups, but it looks as thou my sun box is doing it

AFAIK sendmail queues every message and then at given intervals polls the
message queue and process messages that are there. So, no you're not right,
as sendmail doesn't batch messages. I think that you can change polling
interval in config file of sendmail ( depends on you sendmail version )

Yes, solve DNS issue there. Are you sure that your system know what is the
IP of mail exchanger of yyyy.com ? Are you sure that your system asks DNS
server that knows the answer ? Try nslookup and type yyyy.com for example.
