Richard

you can do the following to test the connection and verify the process is
listening on the port.

On the DB server as root or user with sysadm privs:
netstat -a | grep LISTEN

verify your SQL listener process is running on port 1521. If not stop/kill
the SQL listener and restart (verify again and check your listener log file
for any messages that the process can't use the port).

>From another system that has access to the DB server:
ping {db_server_name}
telnet {db_server_name port_number} # That will be servername space
portnumber
hit esc key or enter to verify the process is replying to your connection.

If all else fail and the listener can't access the port due to a process
locking it (has happen to me many moons ago (Solaris 2.5), reboot the DB
server). Not supposed to happen on the newer Solaris versions ... but you
never know.

Christo

Subject: [Solaris-Users] Strange Port Blocking

I don't understand this one at all; it's completely whacked to me.

I have been trying to get to port 1521 on my Solaris 9 server so that I
can work with Oracle on that server. However, suddenly that port is not
available. My netadmin insists that the firewall is allowing the
connection, and I can find no settings on my own computer which would
block the traffic (I've tried three separate computers, two on-site and
one remote).

What could cause a port to suddenly be unavailable like that? It was
available last week at this time, which was the last time I accessed it.

I apologize if this is an incredibly elementary question.
