Can anyone answer this question?
If a change is made to /etc/hosts does the system need to be rebooted for it
to take effect?
What are you looking to do? Add an entry for a server you've recently
installed in your farm? Change the local machine's name? Affect name
lookups on a workstation?
Some services read through /etc/hosts when they start and might not do so
again until they are restarted, so changes in /etc/hosts won't show in
them until you restart that service (reboot will accomplish this too, of
course). For example, apache can be finicky under certain setups of dns
and /etc/hosts (like vhosts not knowing what they are, where they are).
Other desired effects (like hostname change) may require more steps as
well.
Good luck,
