The answer is "no." The client does not need a public IP and can run
behind a NAT'ed router. It can also be used via a dialup connection. The
client does not need a fixed address either. The VPN client DOES need the
public address of your firewall of course.

We've been reasonably happy with the product other than the lack of a
layered DNS server strategy which most mature VPN client products support
currently. This is the situation where your corporate DNS server addresses
are not used by the client. Instead the ISP's are used which means names for
internal servers must be manually added to a hosts file in order for the
user to avoid using ip addresses...

Subject: [SonicWALL]- Sonicwall VPN questions

I've got the SonicWall Pro-VX, and the group SA enabled. I've installed the
VPN client for XP that I just got yesterday, and now I'm kind of stumped.
I've never gotten a reply from Sonicwall previously about VPN questions, so
I'm hoping someone here can help.

>From the documentation I've gotten from their site, it looks like the 2K
(and thus I'm assuming my new XP) client needs a public IP address. Is this
the case? The PDF files I've looked at talk about giving the software your
public IP for the client who wants to VPN, yet a peer in the area that I
know could swear that one of his clients is using the VPN client on 2000 at
people's homes, on dynamic IP addressing cable modems. Is it possible to
set it up in that situation? Is there any way to use it on a dialup
connection (for my dialup users I support) that uses DHCP, or to use it from
behind a NAT box where you're on a private address range on the adapter
going through a NAT box or server?

Sorry for the questions - I've been dealing with networks, servers, etc for
years and years, but this is the first hardware firewall I've been able to
"play" with, so I'm lacking experience in the VPN client software other than
that which is bundled with the operating systems for Microsoft VPN
servers... If anyone has any info, or documentation that does a good job of
the walkthrough in these situations, please let me know!

Thanks!
