Sonicwalls know the DNS ports. I added the DNS service to my Sonicwall, and
then added the rule to allow it. This goes for most other things as well
(http, https, ftp, pptp, etc...)

Cavell, thanks for the quick reply.

Assuming I put it behind the firewall (not on the DMZ), I will need to
open port(s) for the DNS. Do you know what ports would need to be open?

Wherever you put it, it should always be behind a firewall. Just
because it is in the DMZ, doesn't mean that you can't secure it. Do the
same as you'd do with a server in your LAN, deny everything and only
allow specific ports you need to/from the box. Then only allow what
ports you want LAN users to access to the machine on the DMZ.

Hello, we are going to host a DNS server on our network... However, I am
unsure where I should put it. Opinions on whether it should be inside
the firewall or on the DMZ? I really want to put it inside the
firewall, but I don't want to jeopardize the box that it is on, or the
network. Any help, links, etc is appreciated.
