Isn't PPPoE just an encapsulation of PPPoA anyway?

I haven't done this, but what you're doing in effect is putting
another router between you and the Internet.  Shouldn't have any
effect if you're not doing NAT or anything.  You might have to add a
static route to your router (on the other side of the device you're
adding) so it will know how to get to your network, but it seems
do-able conceptually.
