The group posted a statement on an Islamist website. Earlier Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki had announced on state television that Zarqawi was killed in a US-led air strike in Baquba on Wednesday evening along with seven of his aides. The US military has shown images of Zarqawi's body and the attack on his hideout. Speaking outside the White House in Washington, President George W. Bush said Zarqawi's death was a significant blow to the insurgents. British Prime Minister Tony Blair said he welcomed the news but added that Zarqawi's death would not stop the terror in Iraq. Meanwhile at least 15 people have been killed and more than 30 others wounded in two bomb blasts in the capital Baghdad. Ahmadinejad ready for nuclear talks Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has reportedly said that his country is ready to discuss concerns over its nuclear programme with the international community. Speaking on state television, he said the West had caved in to the will of the Iranian nation. He also called for fair and balanced talks and said threats would be counter-productive. This comes after the EU's foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, presented Iran with a new package of incentives to persuade it to halt its uranium enrichment activities, which the West believes could lead to the production of a nuclear bomb. NATO agrees on strategy revamp NATO defence ministers meeting in Brussels have agreed on a set of new guidelines designed to prepare the military alliance for the challenges of the 21st century. The new strategies would allow NATO to launch as many as six simultaneous missions commiting as many as 30,000 troops along with two major operations involving more than 60,000 troops. Ministers also agreed that member states should allocate at least two percent of their gross domestic product towards defence spending, a target currently only met by seven of NATO's 26 members. Sri Lankan talks called off Sri Lankan government officials say that planned talks with Tamil Tiger rebels in Oslo on how to improve safety for the Norwegian peace monitors have been called off after the rebels refused to take part. The peace monitors have been caught up in several clashes recently between the two sides. The Tamil Tiger rebels have said they want all monitors from European Union countries out of Sri Lanka after the EU officially listed the rebels as a terrorist organisation. Thursday's meeting would have been the first face-to-face talks between government officials and rebels since February. More than 400 people have been killed in the recent upsurge of violence in Sri Lanka. Swiss thwart plot to attack El Al plane Swiss justice authorities say they have thwarted a plot by a group of North Africans to attack a plane belonging to the Israeli airline El Al. The Federal Prosecutor's Office in Bern said in a statement that seven people had been arrested in a series of raids in Zurich and Basle. Officials declined to provide further details. Last month, Israeli media reported that a terrorist cell had planned to launch a rocket attack on an El Al plane during takeoff from Geneva last December. This forced the airline to divert flights from Geneva to Zurich for a period of a week. Merapi spews largest yet cloud of volcanic gas Indonesia's Mount Merapi has spewed out its largest cloud yet of volcanic gases, ash and dust as thousands more residents were evacuated from its slopes. The volcano on the densely-populated Java island was put on red alert on May 13, meaning it was considered poised to erupt. Its activity has been erratic since then but escalated again this week. In the first six hours of Thursday, Merapi spewed five clouds to the southwest, reaching up to 3.5 kilometres. None of the gas clouds reached inhabited areas. Meanwhile officials said just over 18,000 people had left their homes on the higher slopes of the volcano by early Thursday. Nigerian militants release SKorean hostages Five South Korean contracters who were taken hostage by Nigerian militants in the Niger Delta on Tuesday have been released. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, which had claimed their abduction, said it had handed the five oil workers over to a Nigerian official. The group had earlier demanded the release of its leader, who is facing a treason trial in Abuja, in return for freeing the hostages. Ballack out, Cisse out, Rooney in In soccer: There's bad news for Germany ahead of their opening World Cup match against Costa Rica on Friday in Munich with confirmation that captain Michael Ballack will be out of the game due to a calf injury. He picked up the injury in a friendly against Colombia last week.
