Dozens shot dead in Baghdad

Gunmen in the Iraqi capital Baghdad have killed at least 40 people at a fake
checkpoint, in an apparent sectarian attack against Sunni Muslims. Police
say Shia militants stopped cars in the western Jihad district, separated
Sunnis and shot them. The area is close to a Shiite mosque where a car bomb
killed three people late on Saturday.
Security forces have sealed off the area and imposed a curfew, in an effort
to prevent revenge attacks. In other violence an Iraqi army intelligence
officer was shot dead in Karbala, south of Baghdad.
There has been an upsurge in sectarian violence in Iraq in recent months,
raising fears of a civil war.

More US soldiers charged in rape case

Four US soldiers have been charged with rape and murder over an attack on an
Iraqi teenager who was killed along with her family last March. The
soldiers, on active duty in Iraq, are accused of conspiring with former
soldier Steven Green to commit the crimes in Mahmoudiya, south of Baghdad.
Green, who is being held in the US, denies the rape and murder charges. A
fifth soldier serving in Iraq has been charged with dereliction of duty for
failing to report the offences.

Plane crashes in Russia, 122 dead

A Russian airliner has crashed on landing and burst into flames in Siberia,
killing at least 122 people and injuring more than 50. Many of the 200
people on board were children flying for holidays on Lake Baikal. The
Emergencies Ministry said 53 people were in hospital being treated for
burns, trauma and the effects of smoke inhalation.
The fate of 25 passengers was unknown. The Airbus A-310 operated by the
airline Sibir had been on a flight from Moscow. Sibir said three Chinese,
one Azeri and a German on board had died, while seven other foreign
nationals were in hospital. Prosecutors opened a criminal probe into the
crash, with human error and equipment failure considered among the possible
causes. There was no immediate suspicion of foul play.

No let-up in Gaza conflict

Israel has staged more air raids on Gaza as Palestinian militants fired two
more makeshift rockets at Israel's southern town of Sderot. This comes after
Israel rejected a call by the head of the Hamas-led Palestinian government
for a ceasefirere. Israel said there would be no let-up until such rocket
attacks ceased and militants released a soldier captured two weeks ago.
Senior United Nations officials have meanwhile demanded access for UN
workers and supplies, saying Gaza's Palestinian civilians are in desperate
need.
They also said Gaza was on the brink of a public health disaster with water
shortages.

Several killed in southern Afghan fighting

A Canadian soldier and 10 militants have been killed in fierce fighting near
a Taliban stronghold in southern Afghanistan. The military said the battle
took place in southern Kandahar province, where Canadian and Afghan troops
have battled militants since early Saturday in support of a region-wide
offensive targeting Taliban strongholds.

India test-fires missile

India has test-fired its longest-range missile, with a reach of 3,500
kilometres and capable of reaching deep into China. Local media said the
missile splashed down in the Bay of Bengal, near India's Nicobar Islands.
Nuclear-rival Pakistan said it had been informed in advance of the test. The
new Agni III missile can carry a one-tonne warhead, conventional or nuclear.
India's test launch comes five days after North Korea sparked an
international outcry by test-firing seven missiles into the Sea of Japan. At
the UN Security Council on Monday, Japan plans to submit a draft resolution
that would sanction North Korea. The draft is backed by the United States,
Britain and France but opposed by China.

Islamists battle Somali warlord militia

Somalia's Islamist militia has attacked fighters loyal to defeated warlords
in Mogadishu in heavy street battles that have reportedly killed at least 20
people and wounded scores. The death toll looks set to rise further in the
most serious flareup since the Islamists took over the Somali capital from
US-backed warlords a month ago.
The Islamists, who control large swathes of southern Somalia, have vowed to
rid the country of warlords and other faction chiefs who have ruled since
the government of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was toppled in 1991.

Pope chides Spanish secularism

Pope Benedict has wound up a brief visit to Valencia in Spain with an
outdoor mass, praising marriage between men and women and at odds with
Spain's government. It legalised gay marriages last year. The mass drew at
least half a million pilgrims, including King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia.
Absent was Spain's Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. On
Saturday, he met the Pope at talks described by government officials as
"friendly". Benedict told a Catholic rally the family was the best way to
counter "hedonism".
