FOOTBALL: ENGLISH BURIED FAIR PLAY The English team managed to qualify for the semifinals of the European championships after defeating Serbia 2:0 but its players in Nijmegen buried the sense of fair play of which their predecessors in the last century and a half were rightly proud. Young men led from the bench by Stuart Pierce annulled one of the most important and valuable symbols of British football last night in the most tasteless fashion. While future London Chelsea player Slobodan Rajkovic was down on his back in the penalty box calling for a doctor, the English went on as if nothing was happening to make the goal that took them into the semi-finals, thus proving that fair play and gentlemanly behavior toward the opponent no longer live in their country. To make matters even more sad, after the match neither coach Pierce nor the large number of British reporters believed that the young English players had done anything wrong, and they accosted our team coach Miroslav Djukic with questions relating to racist insults by our supporters, even though it was clear to everyone that Djukic could only express his opinion and certainly not take responsibility. It is a fact that the supporters of the Serbian team at one point in time began to shout racist slogans such as can be heard, unfortunately, in stadiums throughout Europe; however, it was also obvious that this was no orchestrated campaign on a broad scale. After warnings by officials over the loudspeakers, the incident was not repeated. It is certain that UEFA's disciplinary commission will be taking a look at last night's events and we believe that it will correctly address both the behavior of our supporters, which was inexcusable, but also the actions of the English players, who directly jeopardized the integrity of the game of football. [...] UEFA INVESTIGATING BEHAVIOR OF SERBIAN SUPPORTERS IN HOLLAND The European football association will investigate accusations of racist behavior by Serbian supporters in their defeat to England at the European championship for young players [U21] in Holland. Accusations against the Serbian supporters will be discussed on July 12 at a regular meeting of the UEFA control and disciplinary commission, advised UEFA spokesman William Galliard. According to some reports from Holland Serbian supporters insulted English defender Nedum Onuoha with racist slurs, and Justin Hote was also targeted on the basis of race by Serbian players in the tunnel after the match. Galliard said that the UEFA will investigate claims of misbehavior by Serbian fans and players after the game. As well, the UEFA will examine the behavior of the English players after the game. Neither team will be punished during the course of the European championships, which end on Saturday, June 23. =============== Group Moderator: [Е-ПОШТА ЗАШТИЋЕНА] page at http://magazine.sorabia.net for more informations about current situation in Serbia http://www.sorabia.net Slusajte GLAS SORABIJE nas talk internet-radio (Serbian Only) http://radio.sorabia.net Yahoo!
