Koštunica criticizes U.S. over Kosovo 25 June 2007 | 11:50 | Source: Beta *BELGRADE -- Prime Minister Vojislav Koštunica criticized the United States’ stance on Kosovo’s future status. * “The increased number of statements coming from American officials supporting Kosovo independence is leading to a worsening of relations between Serbia and the U.S.,” Koštunica said. “America has become the leader in proposing that a part of Serbia’s territory should be made into another Albanian state, which is directly affecting the relations between the two countries,” Koštunica told the Beta news agency Monday. He said that officials in Belgrade have clearly stated that maintaining sovereignty over the territory of Kosovo is Serbia’s top state and national interest. “We think that our demand for the U.S. to work in accordance with all UN charters and respect the internationally recognized borders of Serbia, is a legitimate one. If the U.S. wants to develop good relations with Serbia, then it must respect the territorial sovereignty of Serbia. All international relations between sovereign nations are based on this universal principle,” Koštunica said.
