FOCUS ENGLISH NEWS (BULGARIA) Politika: UNMIK chief backs Kosovo KLA memorial 27 June 2007 | 13:26 | FOCUS News Agency UNMIK chief Joachim Ruecker has approved a law passed by the Kosovo parliament proclaiming the memorial complex dedicated to former Kosovo Liberation Army commander Adem Jashari in Prekaz "an area with special national interest" and placing it under the protection of Kosovo's institutions. Ruecker's promulgation of the law, which claims that the memorial has 'an ontological, anthropological, historical, and cultural significance for Kosovo citizens" and describes Jashari as "a national martyr" notes that that "the term 'national' ... shall not be interpreted in a manner that is inconsistent" with Resolution 1244. Jashari was a local Kosovo Liberation Army commander in the Drenica region responsible for multiple subversive acts and attacks on Yugoslav and Serbian security forces in the 1990's. He was killed in a skirmish with state security forces in 1998.
