*WASHINGTON -- U.S. officials rejected Serbian President Boris Tadić’s
claim that Kosovo's independence would set a precedent.

* State Department official Tom Casey disagreed with Tadić’s claim that
Kosovo independence would destabilize the region and hurt its economic
future as well.

“The U.S. does not see Kosovo as setting a precedent in the extended
region, nor anywhere else in the world,” Casey said.

“Kosovo’s circumstances are unique. The situation is being taken care of
according to the rules of United Nations Security Council resolution
1244, and we expect that it will be solved that way,” Casey said.

“We will continue to support the plan of Martti Ahtisaari as a basis for
establishing Kosovo independence,” Casey told Radio Free Europe.
