“Bypassing UN counterproductive” 28 July 2007 | 16:55 | Source: FoNet *BELGRADE -- Any attempts to bypass the UN in deciding Kosovo’s status will be counterproductive, Aleksandar Alekseyev said Saturday. * Russia’s ambassador to Belgrade reiterated his country’s stance, according to which only the UN Security Council has competences to settle the future status of the Serbian province. He warned that any decision outside the UN would have "catastrophic consequences for the stability of the region, and the entire world for that matter as well." “The chaos that will arise in the international affairs will aggravate relations in all regions in Europe troubled with interethnic tensions. Many of so-called frozen conflicts might re-ignite,” Alekseyev told Blic daily. He reminded that the Contact Group was charged with preparing and arranging the upcoming round of negotiations, and not with making any status decisions.
