"Serbia in EU could discuss borders"

-In a[n]...interview with the Arabic Al Jazeera TV
channel, Foreign Minister Jeremiæ has warned that
"riots could once again rock the Balkans," and called
for caution.
"I believe that we are now in a state of unstable
balance, and that if there were to be any unfortunate
developments and we were not cautious enough, we might
push the Balkans once again into discord and
dissatisfaction."

LONDON - Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremiæ told London
daily The Times the Balkans can have a bright future
only within Europe.

However, in an interview with the paper on Thursday,
he warned that Serbs might "turn their backs on the EU
in the event of an unfair outcome over the Kosovo
question."

"Serbia is suffering a cooling of public support for
the idea of Europe," said Jeremiæ, adding that "I am
afraid that if things go wrong, if the future status
of Kosovo is not handled well, then there will be a
dominant majority within Serbia that will say, ‘This
is not fair, it is humiliating, they (the EU) don’t
want us,' and they will turn their backs on the
Union," Jeremiæ pointed out.

Jeremiæ also said that it would be "pointless at this
time to guess how Belgrade would react to any possible
unilateral proclamation of Kosovo independence," but
stressed that Serbia would not use force.

If Serbia were within the Union, he said, then
"borders would have a different meaning and could be
discussed."

The Times added that Jeremiæ nevertheless "refused to
clarify what this might mean for Kosovo."

New riots could rock Balkans

In a separate interview with the Arabic Al Jazeera TV
channel, Foreign Minister Jeremiæ has warned that
"riots could once again rock the Balkans," and called
for caution.

"I believe that we are now in a state of unstable
balance, and that if there were to be any unfortunate
developments and we were not cautious enough, we might
push the Balkans once again into discord and
dissatisfaction," Al Jazeera quoted the foreign
minister in an English-language interview to be
broadcast on Friday.

On Wednesday, following talks with the British prime
minister's chief foreign policy adviser Simon McDonald
in London, Jeremiæ said that attention should be
focussed on the negotiations so that a compromise
could be found for Kosovo.
