Russia chairing UN SC, priorities include Kosmet March 1, 2008 As of today, Russia will preside in the UN SC in March. According to announcement of its UN representative Vitally Churkin, Kosmet, Afghanistan, Iraq and the Near East will be priorities of the month. In tele-bridge conference between New York and Moscow on February 27, Churkin said that Russia will direct its work towards a resolution on counter-terrorism, disturbing situation in Afghanistan, and the Near East issue, and continue to “carefully monitor the conflict in Kosmet". He assessed for the Tanjug news agency that the situation in Kosmet is very dangerous and tense, the Russian diplomat then said that the UN and NATO should strictly adhere to Resolution 1244 and ensure security in Kosmet, return of refugees and create conditions for normal life. They must not force anyone to violate UN SC Resolution 1244, said Churkin. Otherwise, he emphasized, Russia will raise this issue very severely in the SC. All Souls’ Day <http://glassrbije.org/E/index2.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1767&pop=1&page=0&Itemid=26> March 1, 2008 Orthodox Christians mark today All Souls’ Day, commemorating the departed cousins and friends. They visit graveyards while mass is served in churches. The Serbs in Kosmet mark this year’s All Souls’ Day again by going, escorted by police, to mainly desecrated graveyards. Some 300 Orthodox believers from north Kosovska Mitrovica visited the graveyard in the south of the town this morning. They again came across a horrid scene – monuments at the graves of their beloved were destroyed. Pieces of monuments were so scattered that it took relatives a long time to find burial sites of their beloved. At the time of All Souls’ Day, the graveyard in the south of Kosovska Mitrovica was secured by KPS and UNMIK. Some 30.000 Kosmet Serbs, temporarily residing in Kraljevo, were not able to visit graves of their beloved. The mass was served in Kraljevo. Tel Aviv: Independence of Kosmet destroys the international law <http://glassrbije.org/E/index2.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1763&pop=1&page=0&Itemid=26> 29. februar 2008. 20:27 (Izvor: Tanjug) The unilateral proclamation and recognition of independence of Kosmet sets a precedent in international relations that can break the bases of the international law established after World War II, an eminent Israeli daily Haarec writes. The daily points to the fact that many countries in the world have refused to recognize independence of Kosmet, as that would constitute a threat to the UN Charter, which guarantees the integrity of borders and the preservation of territorial integrity and sovereignty. If Kosmet Albanians deserve an independent state, then it is difficult to deny that right to the Kurds, the Cypriot Turks, the Basques and many other ethnic communities in the world, the daily writes. The daily points to the fact that the so-called republic of Kosovo has not been created by agreement, but by force, which leads to a concerning conclusion that some powerful countries have started a recomposition of international relations, which seriously endangers the principle of state sovereignty as a basis of the present system of the international law.
