Mercator-S, the Serbian subsidiary of Slovenia's biggest retailer, Mercator,
opened a EUR 25m shopping mall in Nis in central Serbia, Slovene Press Agency
reports.
The fourth Mercator shopping centre in Serbia was initially scheduled to open
on 6 March, but the management decided to reschedule the opening because of
uncertain political situation in the country after Kosovo's declaration of
independence.
The declaration was followed by mass protests in which demonstrators also broke
into the premises of the Slovenian embassy in Belgrade on 17 February, while
there have also been calls for the boycott of Slovenian products.
Even before Kosovo declared independence, a bomb exploded early February in the
car park of the Mercator shopping mall in Belgrade, causing minor damage, while
a bomb threat resulted in the evacuation of the Mercator centre in the city of
Cacak.
The 21,000 sq. metre mall in Nis includes several shops, bars and a restaurant
and employs over 500 people.
