Serbia and the international economic crisis 04 October 2008. Serbian National Bank Governor Radovan Jelasic has sent a message to Serbian citizens that they have no reason for worry because of the current international economic crisis, since the foreign currency reserves have been placed in first-class banks, and our banking system is functional. However, the Governor has warned that the effects of the crisis will probably be felt by those citizens who are getting indebted under variable interests rates. In comment to the rebalancing of the budget by the end of 2008, he pointed out that the Government has not followed the recommendations of the National Bank and international financial institutions to introduce restrictive measures. I hope that in 2009 the state will cut down the public expenses and introduce some not-so-popular measures”, stated Jelasic.
