October 2008. 19:49 Most countries refuse to adhere to the position of the US and EU that Kosmet represents a unique case, as in the unilateral proclamation and recognition of independence of the southern Serbian province they see a very dangerous violation of international law, pointed out the commentary of the Le Monde Diplomatique monthly. Only a quarter of UN member states have so far recognized the independence of Kosmet, as big Western powers have abused the principle of the right to self-determination of peoples, by extending it beyond the boundaries of international law, said author of the text Bruno Kopjteres, a professor of political science in Brussels. He warned that the break with the practice of respect of territorial integrity and the recognition of a secessionist entity against the will of the central state destabilizes many countries in the world which are facing the threat of separatist movements. Stressing that the recognition of Kosmet’s independence was against the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of an independent state as another basis of international order, the Belgian expert pointed out that Western countries did not have the right to in this case apply the principle of the right to self-determination as it only relates to colonies or territories under forced external domination.
