WASHINGTON -- Serbia's banking system has received praise from the World
Bank and the IFM, National Bank of Serbia

(NBS) Governor Radovan Jelašić stated.

This, he explained, came due to the country's restrictive monetary policy.

As far as liquidity and solvency go, our country is best placed in the
region, Jelašić said yesterday in Washington, where he is attending the
annual IMF and WB assembly.

Serbia will continue with the same policy, "but that doesn't mean
challenges will not arise", the central bank chief warned.

"One thing is certain, and that is that in the future, all countries,
Serbia included, will need to rely on domestic savings as the main
source of crediting," he said.

Speaking for the state television RTS, Jelašić said that the world
economy is facing a historic challenge, and that many measure have been
taken in order to make money cheaper and halt the recession.

"We won't have to wait for that for a long time, it's a question of days
now," the governor was optimistic.

Just like Serbia, Jelašić added, many other countries have asked to make
financial arrangements with the IMF.
