BELGRADE -- The 16th Orthodox Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, an
international organization bringing together Orthodox MPs from around
the world, has begun in Belgrade.

Following cooperation with European institutions, Serbian MPs now have
an opportunity to confer with their Orthodox colleagues.

The themes of the two-day conference, where representatives from 24
countries will be taking part, will be the Orthodox response to the
world economic crisis and analyzing the plight of Serbs in Kosovo.

Assembly Chairman Sergei Popov said that he was “very happy” that the
conference is taking place in Belgrade.

“I presume this rally of MPs from 24 parliaments will generate ideas
that will be in the spirit of the need for democratic methods to be used
to address delicate problems like the issue of Kosovo,” said Serbian
Parliamentary Speaker Slavica Đukić-Dejanović.

“MPs from states from all continents are taking part at the sessions of
our assembly, and we’re trying to assess all the problems from the point
of view of Orthodoxy. We’ll consider the situation in Kosovo from an
Orthodox perspective, and reach a proposal for the Council of Europe and
the International Court of Justice,” she said.
