Maybe run ifconfig and see if there are any interfaces, other than lo0, in UP state. If not, then the test case can return a skip status.

Seconded. Tests are failing on the xen testbed too, and I wondered how
they could work in a setup without network ...

Is there an option to have them skipped if there is no network? I don't want
to have to setup DNS infrastructure to test DNS!
