A list of bytes is internal to J and is a known type.  A file is foreign.  If I want to send an npy datastream  over a socket, why should I have to write/read a file?

The new primitive should deal with bytes rather than files for the same reason (":) does.

The input/result to the foreign should be a list of bytes, not a file.

We are unaware of these principles, but
our demand is as simple as reading J
*objects* out of binary files (npy). The
version we are using internally is a main
operator (w.) actually, but I don't feel that
being more acceptable.
