WAU, 1 November 2011 [Gurtong] - The visit is the first undertaken by
President Kiir in the Southern Sudanese states since the declaration
of independence in July this year.

The President did not, however, address a public rally despite the
huge turnout by the state residents who lined up the streets from the
Wau airport to the ministerial premises.

Upon arrival, he was welcomed by the state officials led by the State
Governor Rizik Zackaria Hassan, his deputy Efisio Kon Uguak and the
State Legislative Assembly members among others.

President Kiir was accompanied to the trip by two of his advisors;
Telar Ring Deng and Tor Deng Mawien.

Security was tight along the road as the police band joined the state
residents to welcome the president to Wau.

President Kiir then held a closed door meeting with the state
officials before proceeding to neighbouring Warrap State.

He pledged to visit the state after his Warrap visit and urged the
state residents to remain calm.

“I will come back and talk to you all when I end my visit in Warrap
State. I congratulate you for the warm welcome you have accorded me
and my team. I am also grateful for the confidence you have in me by
voting overwhelmingly for me during the last general elections as well
as voting during the referendum that has given us a new country’’,
said Kiir.
