TORIT, 1 November 2011 (Gurtong) – The 5-day training that targets 25 officers was launched Monday by an American non-governmental organisation, Cooperative Housing Foundation (CHF) International. The training seeks to equip the officers with basic skills on how to investigate, treat and handle gender-based violence. CHF International has collaborated with the State Ministry of Local Government and Law Enforcement to facilitate the training, while the UNDP’s Rule of Law unit is coordinating the exercise. The training was launched in the presence of the organized forces’ Deputy Director from the State Ministry of Local Government and Law Enforcement Mr Moses Odwar Mario, the State head of chiefs Madam Magdalena Ihisa Tito and the CHF International South Sudan Country Director Mr Erol Yayboke. Yayboke underscored the crucial role of the training, saying that it is a step towards enhancing the capacity of the local police force. “I acknowledge that South Sudan is starting from scratch and efforts to economically, socially and politically build it are demanding, hence require lots of collective commitment and hard work. This training will consequently help the special protection unit of the police on their day-to-day activities to accordingly respond to the needs of victims or suspects”, he said. Mario who spoke on behalf of the state government advised the participants to concentrate on the training and apply the skills and knowledge acquired appropriately. The training is part of initiatives by the United States of America government to provide support to South Sudan’s judicial system. Recently, US diplomats engaged on groundwork negotiations with the Eastern Equatoria State Government on how to foster a working relationship.
