RUMBEK, 12th January 2012 [Gurtong] - A popular shopping mall in
Rumbek main market was set on fire yesterday night by unknown
arsonists alleged to be most wanted robbers in Lakes State.

According to the shop manager, the arsonists all appeared wearing
black clothes at 4 am and ordered him to be silent as they set the
shop premises ablaze burning everything to ashes without reason.

The Lakes State Governor Hon. Chol Tong Mayay visited the crime scene
in the morning to witness the incidence. He seriously condemned the
act committed by the arsonists while assuring the public that his
Government will investigate the incident and apprehend the
perpetrators.

He also directed the Lakes State businessmen not to sleep in their
respective shops or business premises. Governor Chol assured them
that there will be enough security patrol to protect their properties
from such incidences.

“I strongly condemn such behaviours, the government will arrest these
criminals and we shall reinforce security in town,” the Governor said.

Mr. Shafa Mohamed Ahmed, the owner of the burnt shop revealed that he
lost all the new and expensive mobile phones and accessories he had in
stock. Mohamed appealed to the State government to increase security
personnel in the market to protect their properties.

The fire also destroyed a pharmacy within the premise into ashes.
Nothing was rescued when the fire fighters arrived at the scene, the
traders blamed the fire brigade team of delaying after being alerted.

According to one of the fire fighters who identified himself as Ater,
they lacked enough water for extinguishing the fire and that their
driver usually keeps the car keys at his house.

Lakes State government has prioritised in protecting the State from
external threats while overlooking the internal insecurity incidences.

Early this week, the family of a national assembly member attacked
their father's in-laws leaving four people shot and injured on the
spot.

This is the first time Rumbek is witnessing a shopping mall set ablaze
by arsonists.
