Duk County attacked, dozens reported killed Tuesday, 17 January 2012 14:44 South Sudan >>> .At least 50 people are reported to have been killed in Duk County of Jonglei State on Monday. The county authorities suspect an armed group of youth from Pibor County are responsible for the attack, but neither the identity of the attackers nor the number killed have been confirmed.
Speaking to Radio Miraya on the phone from Duk County on Tuesday, County Commissioner Elijah Mocnom said that the attack happened at midnight and alleged the perpetrators were Murle. "Yes what happened yesterday is that the Murle attackers have been attacked in Duk Padiet Payam. 50 people have been confirmed dead and 11 people wounded," claimed Mocnom. The Commissioner of Pibor County, Joshua Konyi, said it is difficult to establish whether the attackers were from Pibor County, since most of the residents are still scattered as a result of the recent series of attacks and counter-attacks between Murle and Lou Nuer. The spokesperson of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Kouider Zerrouk, said the mission could not yet confirm the number of casualties in this latest attack. The peacekeeping mission did however immediately send an assessment mission to Duk. A total of 60,000 people according to United Nations reports have been displaced and are in need of humanitarian assistance since the armed clashes between Lou Nuer and Murle began in Jonglei State last year.
