Lakes State cracking down on illegal timber dealers
Wednesday, 18 January 2012 13:03 South Sudan >>> .The Director of
Forestry in Lakes State, Paulino Mading Meen, has issued a warning to
those illegally cutting down trees in the state that they will face
punishment.

Madding said that mahogany trees in the state are vulnerable to
over-harvesting by illegal timber dealers. Tuesday's warning follows
reports of increased illegal logging for commercial purposes.

According to Mading, the cutting down of trees in the state has also
had a negative effect on the environment.

He said several loggers are working outside the law in Lakes State.

"Few people have registered. Many people, about 30 have got machines,
they brought them illegally and they are working illegally, so this
year we are scrutinizing it," Mading said.

"Anybody who claims to be a timber dealer must pay what is called
trading license which is SSP1,500 and if he has the machine, he has to
pay for the machine," he added.

Mading told Radio Miraya that only seven people are legally licensed
to engage in the timber business in Lakes.
