SPLA Chief – The army will fight in self-defence if aggressed The Citizen Juba, 13/04/12 - SPLA Chief of General Staff yesterday said in the army general headquarters Bilpam that his courageous forces fought in self-defence to pursue the Sudanese army to the 1956 border. If aggressed again in Panthou, territory within South Sudan, they will fight back, he said. Gen James Hoth Mai said he heard that Bashir has closed down the schools and ministries to come and fight them in their territory and he vowed to do the same with South Sudan schools youth for defence. “Let them come, we will meet in the middle,” declared Hoth to the cheerful youth at Bilpam. The Army Chief further said Panthou, now the Arabs call it Heglieg, according to him was claimed by Khartoum during Nimeri regime after oil discovery. “Panthou (Heglieg) is within our territory and we are in our country,” continued the SPLA Chief of General Staff amid cheers by uniformed soldiers and youth. He advised the angry youth on Sudan invasion to unite their ranks despite their different political affiliation to defend areas belonging to South Sudan. “We will fight to die in our territory,” said Mai calling on youth to be ready for voluntary mobilization by his army to respond to Sudan’s daily provocations in their oil fields. “We have got your call of readiness to mobilise and we will not let you down,” concluded Gen Hoth. Meanwhile SPLA spokesperson Col. Philip Aguer Panyang on Wednesday declared Panthou and beyond in full control of his army after the expulsion of Sudanese army attackers on ground. “Panthou is historically a place of Pariang County of Unity State which used to be inhabited by Dinka of Panaru and Nuer,” explained Aguer last Wednesday. South Sudan officials said they are to control borders of South Sudan as far as the 1956 borderline because Sudan refused to demarcate the border with them since the 2005 signed deal.
