GOVERNMENT APPRECIATES UN, US CONDEMNATION OF SUDAN’S AIRSTRIKES

The Government of South Sudan issued a statement on Tuesday
appreciating UN and US condemnation of Sudan’s bombing of civilians
and infrastructure on South Sudan’s territory.

Information Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin said Ban Ki-moon’s
statement came late but was welcome all the same.

He urged Sudan to heed Mr Ban’s words and return to the table of negotiations.

Dr Marial accuses Khartoum of escalating the conflict by defying the
international community and those calling on Sudan’s President Omar Al
Bashir to end air and ground attacks on South Sudan.

He urged the international community to become ‘more robustly engaged’
in promoting a peaceful resolution to all outstanding issues between
South Sudan and Sudan.

Dr Marial added that South Sudan calls upon Sudan to stop air and land
attacks, start border demarcation and refer disputed territories to
international arbitration.

He added that Juba is ready to resume immediately the
post-independence negotiations with Khartoum.
