Abyei committee calls for International pressure on Sudan
Tuesday, 15 May 2012 08:39 Lagu Francis South Sudan >>> . South Sudan's representative in the Abyei Joint Oversight committee has called on the International community to put pressure on Sudan to withdraw its troops from Abyei. Addressing a press conference in Juba on Tuesday, Luka Biong said the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) are still present in Abyei despite a demand from the international Community to withdraw. Biong warns that if the international community fails to put pressure on Sudan to pull out, South Sudan would consider redeploying its forces in Abyei. "The second option is for the government to reposition the SPLA in Abyei because there is no any logic that you allow the citizens to be under the mercy of SAF in Abyei. It would be for the best interest of the South to redeploy its forces into Abyei within certain period of time. "The third option is about the UN mission in Abyei. If UNISFA fails to exercise its mandate to protect the people, I think there is need to review the mandate of UNISFA in Abyei," Biong argued. Last week South Sudan announced complete withdrawal of its 700 police officers from Abyei. There are an estimated 300 SAF forces in Abyei. The Sudan government said earlier that it would not withdraw unless an administration is formed in the Abyei area. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "South Sudan Info - The Kob" group.
