South Sudan apologises to Kenya over killing incident Sudan Radio Service Nairobi, 16/05/12 - South Sudan has apologized to the Kenyan government for its national that got shot down by an army officer in Juba on Monday. Tabitha Musangi, who was a teacher at the John Garang International School, was shot by a soldier manning the Doctor John Garang Mausoleum after the driver of the taxi she was using failed to stop on time when the whistle alert for lowering the flag went off. Addressing reporters in Nairobi on Wednesday during the celebrations, commemorating 16th May SPLA Movement, the Speaker of the National Assembly Wani Igga said the government is handling the issue. [Wani Igga]: “Recently, an incident happened. It was a sad and deplorable one. A Kenyan citizen was hit by mistake and died; by one of our security guards. We as the government are very furious. We took action. He was arrested and the case is under investigations.” This is not the first incident involving a Kenyan national this year. In February, 2012 three Kenyan’s were killed and three others injured in an attack reportedly carried by armed bandits in Eastern Equatoria. On a separate story, Speaker Wani Igga expressed pessimism that the East African Community chairmanship will reconsider South Sudan’s proposal to join the regional bloc. [Wani Igga]: “Yes, we have applied. You know by blood, by history and by faith we belong to East Africa. We do not want to belong to the European Union. (Laughs) So we have applied and the East African countries are studying this. There is going to be a summit soon for the East African countries. In that summit, we will be invited. South Sudan will be invited as observers. And I believe it is there and then when they will pass the verdict to accept us or not. But I do believe almost 99 percent that we will be accepted.”
