Friday, 18 May 2012 09:09 Lagu Francis Economy >>> . The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is working on a program to boost agricultural production, in line with a directive from President Salva Kiir. On Wednesday, President Salva Kiir ordered for more cultivation to alleviate hunger and reduce dependency on food imports. The Director General for agricultural production in the ministry of agriculture, John Chuol Dhol is looking at demarcating 20,000 hectres in each state for large scale crop production. Dhuol says the ministry and UN agencies have already distributed seeds to different states to kick-start the program. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Radio Miraya, Dhuol said areas in Upper Nile and Aweil can feed the whole country. "We have 1.3 million feddans that one is mechanized, in Renk, Melut and Wad Akona". "If we concentrate on that area alone and we say each fedan got one million from 1.2 or 1.5 tons already, we will have more than two million, meaning that Northern Upper Nile alone can feed South Sudan," he said. He said if the Aweil rice scheme is concentrated on, more food can be produced but it needs government's commitment. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "South Sudan Info - The Kob" group.
