UNMISS releases report on inter-communal violence in Jonglei state
Monday, 25 June 2012 08:58 Muna Tesfai South Sudan >>> . The United Nations Mission in South Sudan – UNMISS - has released a report on the findings of investigations into inter-communal violence that claimed hundreds of lives in Jonglei State between December 2011 and February 2012. The report, documents crimes and human rights violations that took place during the attacks between Murle, Lour Nuer and Dinka communities. It says the attacks were not only aimed at stealing cattle, but targeted entire communities, including women and children. The report further provides nine recommendations to prevent similar attacks in the future, including prosecution of those implicated in the violence and activation of a 7-man government committee that was set up to probe the clashes. Speaking to Radio Miraya, the head of the Human Rights Department at the UN Mission in South Sudan – Richard Bennet says, the report suggests that the committee headed by Professor Deng Awur Wecnyin be facilitated to begin its work. "One of our strong recommendations is that the government should activate rapidly this committee and provide it with the necessary resources to do its work, because in the past there has been a climate of impunity. It also considers that there should be a comprehensive plan to address this very complex situation in Jonglei State. Infact, quite a number of the recommendations are already being carried out by the government but needs to reinforce what it is already doing". Bennet has asked the government and all stakeholders to use the report productively. "We hope that is not just another report, we think that it is an important report, we ask the government and all the actors concerned from all the communities in Jonglei State to take it seriously. We have done our utmost best to make it as balanced and impartial as possible and we will be making more public reports in time to come, not only on incidents and events but also on systematic issues for example we are currently looking at the issue of arbitrary detention". The report recorded 612 fatalities in attacks on Murle settlements and 276 deaths resulting from attacks on the Lou-Nuer and Dinka communities. It was compiled by the Human Rights Division of the UN Mission in South Sudan with support from the office of the High Commissioner for human rights. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "South Sudan Info - The Kob" group.
