Humanitarian partners operating in South Sudan have increased their
appeal for operations in the year 2012 from $763 million to $1.15
billion.

The increase was made following a mid-year assessment conducted by 116
organizations.

The organizations said more funding was needed to address humanitarian
challenges for refugees fleeing the warring Blue Nile and South
Kordofan states.

The agencies said the funds would also be used to address hardships
brought about by austerity measures following the shutdown of oil
production in January this year.

A report from the United Nations Office for Coordination of
Humanitarian Affairs, UNOCHA, warned that the austerity measures will
lead to worsening food security, increased poverty, higher child
mortality and declining school attendance.

The increased funding will go towards 289 projects that have already
been identified by government, humanitarian institutions,
Non-Governmental Organizations, United Nation agencies and the donor
community.
