Reported cases of polio disease in unity state
Sudan Radio Service Juba, 23/07/12 – The federal Ministry of Health
says new cases of polio disease have been reported in a Refugee camp
in Unity State.
The Health Minister, Michael Milly confirmed the situation to SRS and
said, “over two million children have received polio vaccine and now
it is a fourth month that we have not reported any case of polio,
although two days ago suspected cases of polio were reported in the
refugee camp with people coming from southern Kordofan to South Sudan
some two cases of polio were reported, but they are unconfirmed. Now,
if we go at that rate, it means by the end of next year we will be
able to declare South Sudan free of polio. Guinea warm, we have also
succeed to contain Guinea worms, we are left with only one hundred and
twenty endemic villages in South Sudan, compared to one thousand and
twenty five endemic villages last year at the same time, that is a
very significant progress, if it goes by this rate, we will also
declare south Sudan free of worms by the end of next year.”
Last year, health reports indicated that South Sudan was free of the disease.
Doctor Milly revealed that hospitals are in dire need of medical
personnel and they also lack equipment.
