East coast fever breaks out in Tonj
Sudan Radio Service Kuajok, 23/07/12 – Warrap State Ministry of Animal
Resources and Fisheries says there is an outbreak of east coast fever
in Tonj East and Tonj-North Counties. East Coast fever is a disease of
cattle, sheep and goats caused by the protozoan parasite Theileria
parva.
It is among the most important livestock diseases in Africa, causing
an annual loss of 1.1 million cattle.
Speaking to SRS in Kuajok, Warrap State Minister of Animal Resources
and Fisheries, Paul Dhel Gum urged the National Health Ministry for a
quick intervention in order to help contain the disease.
“East Coast fever a week ago appeared in Tonj East and part of Tonj
North county that is in Warrap state and we diagnosed the disease and
we have now formed a taskforce and the taskforce left the state
capital [Kuajok] yesterday and they are now on the ground to help see
how to control the disease. But also it will be very, very
difficult…we are actually asking the intervention of the national
ministry because there is a total lack of vaccine, we don’t have
vaccine here. And once we have vaccine we have the problem of the cold
chain, the storage of vaccine itself because you need to have fridges
and all that. The fridges that we used to have some have been sent to
some of the counties, and as we know the vast land of Warrap State, it
is very difficult to move from one county to the other county in a
very short time, roads are not there, there are no vehicles for the
transportation. So these people now are on the ground and they have
been contacting us back asking for the quick intervention of the
national ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries and to provide the
necessary vaccine so that we control the disease in that area and it
shouldn’t spread to the areas,” said Dhel.
Mister Dhel disclosed that his ministry has twenty six vacant
positions for graduates of veterinary medicine and animal productions
sciences.
He is urging qualified South Sudanese to apply for these posts.
